Moroccan Cities of the North - 4 Days

Arrive in Casablanca, Morocco’s modern Atlantic gateway, and begin your short northern Morocco cultural journey. Depending on your arrival time, start with one of the city’s most important landmarks: Hassan II Mosque.

Set beside the Atlantic Ocean, Hassan II Mosque is one of Morocco’s most impressive architectural monuments. Its oceanfront location, carved details, zellij tilework, woodwork, marble, and high minaret make it a powerful introduction to Moroccan craftsmanship and Islamic architecture. After the Casablanca visit, meet your private driver and begin the journey east toward Fes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities and one of the most important cultural destinations in the country. The drive connects Morocco’s modern coastal identity with the historic heart of the north.

Upon arrival in Fes, settle into your traditional riad or hotel. If time allows before evening, visit the Merenid Tombs viewpoint for a wide view over the old city, medina rooftops, surrounding hills, and historic skyline. After breakfast in Fes, meet your local guide for a cultural discovery of Morocco’s oldest imperial city. Fes is often considered the spiritual and artistic heart of the country, with one of the most complete medieval medinas in the Arab world.

Begin near Bab Boujloud, the famous blue gate that leads into Fes el Bali. From here, follow the old medina’s narrow streets, where daily life continues through souks, food stalls, artisan workshops, mosques, fountains, schools, and hidden courtyards. The medina can feel like a living museum, but it is also a real working city where crafts, trade, and family life remain deeply connected.

Walk along Talâa Kebira, one of the main historic routes through the old city. As you explore, notice the mix of Moroccan, Andalusian, Spanish, and Tunisian influences in the architecture, doors, tiles, carved wood, and decorative details.

Visit the Chouara Tannery viewpoint if included in the confirmed program. This historic tannery is one of the most recognizable artisan sites in Fes, where leather is still treated and dyed using traditional methods. From above, you can see the stone dyeing vats, leather hides, workers, and surrounding workshops that preserve centuries of craftsmanship.

Continue to Al Attarine Madrasa if timing and access allow. This 14th-century school is known for its refined zellij tilework, carved plaster, woodwork, courtyard design, and Islamic architectural detail. It is one of the best places to appreciate the artistic precision that makes Fes so important in Moroccan heritage.

Later, continue toward Fes el Jdid and the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, where a different part of the city’s history can be explored through architecture, streets, cemetery areas, and the memory of Fes’s diverse communities. If time allows, the visit can also include a short contrast with Ville Nouvelle, the French-influenced modern district of Fes.

Overnight in Fes.

After breakfast in Fes, leave the city and begin a cultural day through imperial history, Roman heritage, and the mountain charm of Chefchaouen. This route connects three very different faces of northern Morocco in one memorable day.

Start with Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. Meknes is known for its monumental gates, royal history, old walls, gardens, and the legacy of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Depending on timing and access, the visit can include Bab al-Mansour, one of Morocco’s most impressive historic gates, as well as the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, imperial city areas, and surrounding heritage sites.

Continue to Volubilis, a UNESCO-listed Roman archaeological site set in open countryside near Meknes. Walk among ancient columns, stone streets, merchant houses, temples, arches, and mosaic floors that show the Roman presence in North Africa. The site offers a strong contrast with the medinas of Fes and Meknes, adding a deeper historical layer to this northern Morocco itinerary.

After Volubilis, continue north toward the Rif Mountains and Chefchaouen. The road gradually changes into mountain scenery, with hills, valleys, villages, and wide views as you approach one of Morocco’s most photogenic towns.

Arrive in Chefchaouen, known for its blue-washed streets, peaceful atmosphere, narrow alleys, artisan shops, small cafés, and relaxed mountain rhythm. After checking into your accommodation, enjoy time to explore the old medina at your own pace.

Walk through the blue lanes, visit Plaza Outa el-Hammam, browse small shops, and enjoy the contrast between whitewashed walls, blue doors, mountain light, and local life. Chefchaouen is especially beautiful in the late afternoon when the streets soften with evening light.

For travelers who enjoy walking and photography, a sunset walk toward the Spanish Mosque viewpoint can be included if timing and comfort allow. From this hillside area, you can enjoy one of the best views over the Blue City, the medina rooftops, and the Rif Mountains.

Overnight in Chefchaouen.

Wake up early in Chefchaouen and enjoy a final quiet moment in the Blue City. Early morning is one of the best times to photograph the blue streets, when the alleys are calm, the light is soft, and the medina has a peaceful atmosphere before the shops and cafés become active.

After breakfast, meet your private driver and begin the journey south toward Rabat, Morocco’s present-day capital and one of the country’s imperial cities. The route leaves the Rif Mountains behind and continues through northern landscapes toward the Atlantic side of Morocco.

Arrive in Rabat for a cultural visit adapted to your timing and departure schedule. Begin with Chellah if included, a historic fortified necropolis where ancient ruins, gardens, walls, and quiet pathways reveal layers of Roman, Islamic, and Moroccan history.

Continue to the Kasbah of the Oudayas, one of Rabat’s most atmospheric old quarters. Enter through the monumental gate and walk through narrow lanes, white-and-blue streets, historic walls, and viewpoints over the Bou Regreg River and the Atlantic coastline. If timing allows, visit the Andalusian Gardens, a peaceful green space close to the kasbah.

The visit can also include Hassan Tower, the unfinished minaret of a grand historic mosque project, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, known for its royal architecture, marble, carved details, and national importance.

After Rabat, continue to Casablanca. Depending on your departure time, you may go directly to Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport, your hotel, or another confirmed drop-off point. If time allows before departure, enjoy a short stop along Boulevard de la Corniche or visit Rick’s Café for a final Casablanca meal or coffee.

This final day completes the northern Morocco route with blue mountain streets, capital-city monuments, Atlantic views, and return support to Casablanca.
